In 2021, La Maison and Velier launched a rum bottling range in collaboration with Magnum, the legendary photo agency founded in 1947 by some of the greatest names in photography, including Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Magnum has long brought together some of the world’s finest photojournalists.
For the inaugural release, the focus was on one of Magnum’s former presidents, American photographer Elliott Erwitt, born in 1928 in Paris. Four of his photographs were selected to illustrate the labels of this first series.
The second edition of the Magnum range celebrates American photographer Alex Webb, born in 1952 and a member of the agency since 1979. He is renowned for his vibrant, captivating colour photographs that capture serendipitous or enigmatic moments
For its third edition, the Magnum series makes a stop in Jamaica, at the heart of Hampden Distillery. This year, Cristina De Middel, Spanish photographer and member of Magnum Photos, was invited by La Maison & Velier to immerse herself for a week in the world of Hampden.
The sultry darkness of the fermentation room, the maze of pipes, façades overrun with vegetation, peacocks with iridescent plumage, dusty and damp interiors… through her lens and unexpected framing, Cristina De Middel gives the place a cinematic dimension, sometimes tinged with surrealism.
More than just a collection of rums, this series embodies a bridge between the art of distillation and that of the image. Each bottle brings these two worlds together, highlighting an original work by a master photographer and an exceptional rum from a renowned distillery. This range is designed to appeal not only to rum lovers, but also to art and photography collectors.
